The Algarve is renowned for its spectacular coastline and wonderful beaches and over the years I have loved visiting many resorts in the Algarve to appreciate them in all their glory.
2012 was the year when the Algarve was voted one of the best beach destinations in the whole of Europe and I can definitely see why, they are simply stunning. To be honest, it was hard to just limit it down to just 10 beaches, but I have given it a lot of thought and so here they are…
In reverse order:
10 ~ Praia do Amado
A fabulous choice for the keen surfer as there is a surf school located here. This beach is located on the west coast, only a short distance away from Carrapateira.
9 ~ Praia de Molhe, Ferragudo
A wonderful beach to capture that perfect sunset, it is only a small beach but when that sunset rolls in, it is simply breathtaking. It is located in between Carvoeiro and Ferragudo and alongside the lighthouse which is just a short walk away from the harbour.
8 ~ Praia da Marinha
One of the most recognisable sights of Algarve are its magnificent cliffs, secret coves and splendid curvatures of rock and this location has it all. It is located east of Carvoeiro, near Armacao de Pera and can be accessed by some steep steps or your can take in the view from the cliff top if you prefer.
7 ~ Monte Clérigo
This wonderful beach has beautiful sands and rolling waves with the added unique quality of little black rocks that have been washed ashore which are quite splendid. Located just outside Aljezur.
6 ~ Bordeira
You will not find this spacious beach overcrowded, even in the high season and there is lots to explore here, including the vast sand dunes. Situated in Bordeira which is near Carrapateira.
5 ~ Armação de Pêra
A great place to see working Portuguese fisherman in their own habitat along this expanding beach. As well as that, it is a superb place for tourists to visit with many beach bars and sunbathing spots to relax in.
4 ~ Evaristo beach
Just outside Albufeira, this rocky location has a wonderful restaurant that overlooks the beach where you can find many rock pools to explore. Not only that, this beach has also been known to host the odd celebrity or two.
3 ~ Galé Beach
Another wonderful beach to enjoy a fabulous sunset, it is a more sheltered beach than the others and has spectacular rock formations, this is a great place to enjoy a gentle stroll before cosying up to wait for the sunset to roll in.
2 ~ Praia dos Três Irmãos
This beach has it all, golden sands, secret coves and fabulous rocks that extend into the sea. Not surprisingly, there are great restaurants, bars and cafes located here as it is a popular beach to visit. It can be found on the eastern end of Alvor beach.
1 ~ Amoreira beach
So here it is, my number one beach in Portugal goes to Amoreira beach which is situated in Aljezur, on the west coast. What I love most about this beach is its natural, picture perfect backdrop that you would find on a postcard! Wonderful soft sands, surrounded by sand dunes and rock formations and stunning lagoon that can be reached at low tide. There is a beautiful little restaurant that overlooks this beach, what more can you ask for.
